Recycling Residential Gas Cylinders

At Worthington, we’re driven to be good environmental stewards and promote sustainable solutions that protect our planet. As a leading U.S.-based cylinder manufacturer, we’re committed to recycling discarded residential gas cylinders and believe a collaborative approach is the best way to develop such programs that meet the needs of customers, retailers, producers and the government.

A Web of Effort

In 2017, conversations began around the development of a cloud-based, industrial communication system that could track cylinders and collect associated data. Bringing a truly transformational, technology-centric and lightweight gas cylinder to market required a lot of heavy lifting from the Portugal team. “We had to consider multiple variables: Network hosting, back-office databases, dashboards, mobile applications—to name a few,” explained Pedro Vieira, manager, Research and Development. There were also safety measures to meet, data privacy laws to consider and a cylinder to design that would be capable of housing the hardware. “We needed to leverage the strategic partnerships and customer trust we have cultivated over the decades.”

How was the research conducted?
To better understand the current practices for collection and management of discarded residential gas cylinders, the following tasks were undertaken in Connecticut:
- Surveys were sent to municipal government, regional household hazardous waste coordinators, and municipal transfer facility operators
- Interviews were conducted with major retailers, propane gas distributors, waste management service providers, colleges, and private campgrounds
- Information was gathered from DEEP related to pressurized cylinder management in state parks, municipalities, and other sites
How does Connecticut’s PA 22-27 work?
The new law meets five primary objectives:
- Establishes a process for free, convenient, and accessible statewide collection of residential gas cylinders.
- Ensures safe handling after use at home or in state parks and campgrounds.
- Requires an industry-led recycling program that minimizes public sector involvement, which is projected to deliver up to $200,000 in annual state savings.
- Enables producers to continuously improve their programs and product at their expense.
- Allows for the reuse of residual gases and the recycling of the metal in the cylinders.
